My Homemade Taho

 taho

Taho is a popular Pinoy street food sold by vendors known as “magtataho”. It’s a soft jello-like snack made of processed soybeans mixed with sweet syrup we call ‘arnibal‘ and topped with tapioca pearls or ‘sago.’

It’s a delicious healthy snack that most of us probably have grown accustomed to especially if we lived in provinces. But these days, seldom do you see the magtataho sell this in the metropolis, there are, however, stalls inside the malls that sells taho, even the flavored ones.

I thought of sharing this recipe of my homemade version of taho, so your kids won’t miss out on one of the yummiest treats every childhood should have. In this particular recipe, instead of processing soy beans, I made use of soft tofu which is readily available in most major supermarkets.

Homemade Taho
(Makes 4 servings)

Ingredients

 HOMEMADE TAHO

550g soft tofu (extra soft is better)
½ cup tapioca pearls
1¼ cup brown sugar
4½ cups water

Bring to a boil 4 cups of water.

SAGO
Add the tapioca pearls and cook for about 35 minutes in medium heat.
Add ¼ cup brown sugar and mix well.
Turn off the heat and set aside the tapioca pearls.

Boil the remaining ½ cup of water.
Add 1 cup of brown sugar once the water starts to boil.
Mix well and simmer for 1 minute.

arnibal
Set aside.

 tofu

Transfer the extra soft tofu in a microwavable bowl, mug or a clear microwavable glass then heat in a microwave oven for a minute. For non-microwave users, use a double broiler to heat the tofu (or improvise using 2 saucepans).

taho

Top the soft tofu with as much as you want tapioca pearls and sweet syrup.

taho

Serve warm. Enjoy!

  1. Hmm, taho is one of our favorite desserts! An all-time favorite of Pinoys 🙂 My hubby’s favorite is the one in Baguio where they put strawberry syrup over the taho.
